Circulation is something that seniors should be concerned about, even if they don’t have any diagnosed vascular conditions. Poor circulation can cause edema or swelling in the legs. It can also cause other health problems. As seniors get older they tend to have more problems keeping their circulation strong, especially seniors who have diabetes or heart disease. Seniors should do these things to improve circulation:

Walk

One of the best things that seniors can do to improve their circulation is to walk every day. Walking just one to two miles per day, or about 30 minutes each day, can dramatically improve circulation. It will also improve heart health, help seniors manage diabetes, and help seniors maintain a healthy weight. Walking is something that most seniors can do and it has a huge range of health benefits. Seniors who have home care can get their home care provider to go walking with them so they have a buddy to walk with.

When the weather is bad seniors can walk indoors at any gym that has a track, on a treadmill, or even at the local mall. Joining other seniors in walking groups and clubs can help keep seniors motivated to keep moving.

Keep Feet Elevated

When seniors are not walking they should be elevating their feet. Using a recliner or an ottoman to lift up their legs can prevent blood from pooling in the legs as a result of poor circulation. Sitting with elevated feet can also help prevent swelling of the ankles. If your senior parent doesn’t have a recliner look into getting them a cushioned ottoman they can use to raise their feet when they are sitting in their favorite spot.

Compression socks and stocking can also help seniors keep their circulation going while they are sitting, but some seniors may need help to get those on.

Drink Lots Of Water

Water will improve blood flow and circulation as well as cleaning out the cells in the body and transporting oxygenated blood all over the body. Staying hydrated will also prevent seniors from struggling with symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, and confusion. Most seniors are not drinking enough water each day. Ask your senior parent’s home care provider to remind them at regular intervals to drink water and try to keep them drinking water throughout the day.

Quit Smoking

Seniors who smoke should quit for many reasons. But one of the biggest reasons is because smoking narrows the blood vessels and makes it difficult for blood to pass through. The constriction of the blood vessels caused by smoking can make poor circulation even worse.

Quitting smoking can be tough, especially for seniors that have been smoking for most of their lives. But your senior parent’s doctor can suggest medications that may be able to help them quit. There are also over the counter aids available to help them quit. Quitting smoking today will improve your senior parent’s circulation and increase their chances of living a longer and healthier life.
