If you’re taking care of a parent with Alzheimer’s it’s totally normal to feel overwhelmed or like you don’t know what you’re doing. Taking care of a senior parent with Alzheimer’s can be tough.
But many family caregivers don’t want to admit when they need a break because they feel like it means that they can’t handle the job of taking care of their senior loved one. But everyone needs a break from time to time.
Alzheimer’s care is a type of senior care that focuses on caring for seniors with Alzheimer’s. All of the Alzheimer’s care providers have had training in the best ways to care for someone with Alzheimer’s. And they have experience taking care of seniors who have Alzheimer’s.
They know how to recognize when your senior parent is cold, or hungry, or tired, or needs something even if your senior loved one can’t tell them what they need. Alzheimer’s care for your senior parent gives you the freedom to take a day, a week, or even two weeks off so that you can recuperate and rejuvenate yourself. And if you’re seeing any of these signs in yourself then you definitely need to take some time off:

ToggleBeing Impatient or Short
Have you caught yourself speaking to your senior parent, your spouse, or your kids with an angry or irritated tone? Do you snap at the grocery store clerk who gives you the wrong change or the person that takes too long in the coffee shop drive-thru? If you feel irritated or angry a lot of the time and you can’t seem to let things go, that’s a big sign that you need a break. You need to slow down and process your emotions before you completely blow up at someone you don’t mean to blow up at.
Not Feeling Anything
On the opposite end of the spectrum is dissociation, or feeling numb to everything. If everything seems flat, colorless, and dull you definitely need a break. If your life feels like an unending sea of obligations and responsibilities you need a break. Get Alzheimer’s care to make sure your senior parent is taken care of and then go away for a few days. Take a trip to clear your head and don’t come back until you are feeling things again.
Not Being Able To Sleep
If you toss and turn at night even though you’re tired and you can’t seem to sleep no matter how tired you are, that could mean you need a break. If you’re overwhelmed by caring for your senior parent and when you try to sleep you remember the doctor’s appointment you need to book and food you need to buy and bills that need to be paid and suddenly it’s morning and you’ve been awake all night worrying you’re not alone. But you do need to take a break and try to relax.
It could also be the case that you sleep too much and have a hard time getting out of bed. That’s another type of reaction to extreme stress and it also means that you need a break.
